Who & How We Serve

Who We Serve

Reading Connections serves any Guilford County adult over the age of 18 desiring to improve literacy skills.  Students enroll at Reading Connections with a specific learning objective already in mind (e.g. obtaining a GED in the long-term, obtaining a driver's license in the short-term). The average student scores at the 4th grade reading level or below.  These adults are less likely to be employed full-time, to earn high wages or to vote.  They are more likely to receive public assistance, live in poverty and rely on resources other than printed materials for information.

Approximately 65% of our students are native English speakers and 35% are non-English speakers.  The typical student is over age 28.  Reading Connections is currently serving adults as young as 18 and as old as 70.  They have learned about Reading Connections from other students or through referrals from agencies such as the Department of Social Services, Guilford Technical Community College, Greensboro Housing Authority, Goodwill, and others.

Statistics

Reading Connections served 560 students in 2006-2007 who completed a combined total of 10,292 hours of instruction. Of our full-time students, 35% advanced at least one functional literacy level.  134 new tutors received training.  251 volunteers tutored over the course of the year.
