Tutor Survey Reminder

Share Your Experience

Would you or your student like to tell others about your experience working with Reading Connections? Telling others about why we are committed to literacy and to Reading Connections is a powerful way to share our mission and attract supporters. Between August and November Reading Connections receives many requests for students and tutors to talk to potential United Way donors and other groups. If you or your student are interested in sharing your story and speaking on our behalf, please contact Marcy Ray at 230-2223 or by email at mray@readingconnections.org.


Motheread Training

Reading Connections has coordinated training for tutors and teachers on using the Motheread curriculum with adult learners. This curriculum helps adults improve their reading and parenting skills with the use of children's literature. The training will be held on August 20th – 22nd at the YWCA in High Point which is located at 112 Gatewood Avenue.

The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, August 20th 9am – 4pm
Thursday, August 21st 9 am – 4pm
Friday, August 22nd 9am – 3pm

Please let Kim Taylor (ktaylor@readingconnections.org ) know if you would like to attend this certification class.


Arabic Classes

FaithAction International House in Greensboro will offer beginning Arabic classes starting in September. The class will start on Thursday September 4 from 4:30-6:00pm. It will meet each Thursday for 12 weeks. FaithAction is also planning on offering Beginning French and Spanish. All foreign language classes are $50 and include the cost of materials. If you would like to register for the class, please contact Rebecca Burrell at call 379-0037 ext 1#.


Don't Forget ! Student and Tutor Awards Ceremony August 18

We are honored to have Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson and Michael Prioleau from the High Point Workforce Alliance as our keynote speakers at the Student and Tutor Awards Ceremony, which will be held Monday, August 18 th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. We will serve a light dinner and awards students and tutors for their dedication to and improvement in literacy. The event will be held in downtown Greensboro in the Fellowship Hall of West Market United Methodist Church which is located at the corner of Friendly and Commerce place just a few blocks west of our Greensboro office. Site Visits

The Reading Connections staff and Board of Directors are working hard to raise awareness in the Guilford County community about adult illiteracy and the outstanding work our tutors and students do to combat this problem. We will be holding one hour site visits at least once a month to introduce community members to Reading Connections. We encourage you to invite people that you know to attend a site visit on Thurday, August 21 at 5:00 p.m. in the 5th floor conference room of the Self-Help Building at 122 N. Elm Street in Greensboro. Please contact Marcy Ray at mray@readingconnections.org if you or your friends are interested in attending.



Online Reading Training

On August 14 th at 2:00 p.m , there will be an online webinar on developing fluent readers. Fluent readers are able to read a text rapidly and smoothly. Fluency in reading enables students to build comprehension. To attend this FREE presentation, you will need to register. Now Hiring

Reading Connections is now hiring a new Student Services Coordinator for our office in High Point. If you are interested in learning more about this position, contact Sandra Flowers at sflowers@readingconnections.org for a copy of the job description or to submit your resume.

Reading Connections is also hiring 1 part-time AmeriCorps member for our Greensboro office and 1 full-time AmeriCorps members to serve in the High Point office. These are great positions for recent college graduates who are interested in working with adult literacy. Goodbye

Program Manager Sarah Humpal will be leaving Reading Connections on August 22 nd to pursue graduate studies in Chicago. Sarah says, “It has been wonderful to work with all of the volunteers and students. Monthly Tutoring Reports


If you are an active tutor, please remember to turn in your Monthly Tutoring Report, which is due on the 5th of each month.  If you have done so already, thank you!  You can submit these hours by email, mail, fax, or phone.  Call the office if you have questions about reporting your tutoring hours.


Office Closed

The Reading Connections offices will be closed Monday, September 1 st in observation of Labor Day.
