Help Reading Connections Win $50,000!

The Network for Good is sponsoring a fundraising contest for nonprofits. The agency with the most donations - in whatever amount - by January 31 will win $50,000! To help out, visit http://www.networkforgood.org/pca/Badge.aspx?BadgeId=109004 and click "donate." You can donate any amount - even $1 will help, since it's not the amount but the number of individual donations that counts. If you'd really like to help, send the link to your friends and ask them to lend a hand!

Monthly Tutoring Reports

If you are an active tutor, please remember to turn in your Monthly Tutoring Report, which is due on the 5th of each month.  If you have done so already, thank you!  You can submit these hours by email, mail, fax, or phone.  Call the office if you have questions about reporting your tutoring hours.

Thank You!

Over 125 students and tutors attended the Holiday Social last month! Thanks to all of you for celebrating with us and making the event so fun and successful. Our next social event will be held in early summer when we will celebrate student and tutor successes with our annual awards ceremony.

Online Supplemental Training

Sharpen your tutoring skills in reading from the comfort of your own home! On Friday, January 11 th from 1:30 – 2:45 pm , the National Institute for Literacy will hold a webcast on research-based practices for teaching adults reading. This training is free and will teach you proven practices to help your student increase reading fluency and vocabulary. To sign-up for this training, visit http://www.nifl.gov/ . Please let us know if you attend this training and if you would recommend it to other volunteers.

Student Resume Workshop

Does your student need help writing a resume? Does she already have a resume that she wants to improve? Reading Connections will hold a resume workshop on Monday, January 14th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in the computer lab of the Greensboro office. We are also looking for volunteers from 6:30 – 7:30 pm to help students revise resumes. Contact Rhiannon Kelly if you would like more information about this workshop at rkelly@readingconnections.org .

Reading Connections Site Visits

The Reading Connections staff and Board of Directors are working hard to raise awareness in the Guilford County community about adult illiteracy and the outstanding work our tutors and students do to combat this problem. We will be holding one hour site visits at least once a month to introduce community members to Reading Connections. We encourage you to invite people that you know to attend a site visit on Wednesday, January 23 rd from 8:30 – 9:30 am in the 5 th floor conference room of the Self-Help Building at 122 N. Elm Street in Greensboro. Please contact Karen Langston at klangston@readingconnections.org if you have friends that are interested in attending.

New volunteers should register in advance by calling 230-2223 or emailing shumpal@readingconnections.org .
