Movie-making Class for ESOL Students

Faith Action House is seeking students for an exciting course in movie-making starting August 1st! Teachers include two High Point University professors, two professional videographers and a minister who was a filmmaker in his former life. Faith Action House is looking for committed immigrants and refugees who want to learn a whole new skill set, or brush up on an old one.

The students will learn good storytelling for video, how to handle a movie camera, how to download photos from the internet. They'll learn photo editing, audio and video editing, as well as how to use Facebook/Flickr and YouTube. All of the students will produce a short film of one minute in English and in their own language.

At the end of October there will be a public film festival to show the movies to friends, family and the general public. The skills students gain in the class can be used to support their favorite religious congegation, service organizations or even family celebrations and events.

The class is free to all immigrants regardless of their citizenship status , but each student must commit to coming to all the classes for 12 weeks, starting August 1st, every Saturday morning from 9-1. Each class is packed with essential information about how to conceive, shoot and produce a movie.

The class is a partnership between FaithAction International House and the American Friends Service Committee with a whole lot of support from UNC-Greensboro, which is donating an up-to-date computer lab for our editing and post-production work.

If you know a student who would like to participate, please contact Micah Guindon at mguindon@readingconnections.org or 230-2223.

Student Council

Student Council is a great opportunity for students who are interested in becoming a leader, speaking in classes and at events, giving back to our community, and/or helping to plan our socials and celebrations. Please be sure to inform your student of these opportunities to get involved:

Monthly Tutor Reports

If you are an active tutor, please remember to turn in your Monthly Tutoring Report, which is due on the 5th of each month.  If you have done so already, thank you!  You can submit these hours by email, mail, fax, or phone.  Call the office if you have questions about reporting your tutoring hours. Remember that Reading Connections' state funding depends on being able to demonstrate success. That includes the number of instructional hours per student. If we don't get your tutor reports, we can't record student hours and are likely to get reduced state funding. Please be sure to turn these in monthly!
