Monthly Tutoring Reports

If you are an active tutor, please remember to turn in your Monthly Tutoring Report, which is due on the 5th of each month.  If you have done so already, thank you!  You can submit these hours by email, mail, fax, or phone.  Call the office if you have questions about reporting your tutoring hours.

Writing Class

Reading Connections will offer a writing class for students on Monday evenings from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the Greensboro office. Students will learn about the writing process and how to express themselves in writing. Participants will receive a free journal and refreshments each week. The class starts March 10 and runs through April 28. Contact Sarah Humpal to register your student at 230-2223 or shumpal@readingconnections.org

Student Stories

All of the Reading Connections students have special stories about their trials and triumphs with literacy and life. Does your student have an especially compelling story? Reading Connections wants to highlight some of our Super Student Stories in upcoming public relations events. Send us your student's story and receive an award and special recognition from Reading Connections. Contact Marcy Ray at 230-2223 or mray@readingconnections.org with questions or to share a story.

Special Series on Literacy

On Monday, February 25, ABC's World News with Charles Gibson featured a special series, “Living in the Shadows: Illiteracy in America” that examines the hidden phenomenon of illiteracy in this country. The report will be featured on the World News webcast, available on ABCNEWS.com, ABC News Now, Apple iTunes, and mobile phones.

An estimated 30 million people in the U.S. cannot read a simple sentence, and as Senior Justice Department Correspondent Pierre Thomas reports, undiagnosed learning disorders, poverty, and unstable homes are among the factors contributing to this nation-wide crisis. As a volunteer, you help combat this crisis.

The Human Race

Reading Connections staff and volunteers will once again be walking in the annual Human Race Walk presented by the Volunteer Center of Greensboro. The 5K walk will be held in the morning on Saturday, March 15 th and is a fundraising event for Reading Connections, the Volunteer Center of Greensboro, and a large number of other local non-profit and charity organizations. For more information about this event, contact Sarah Humpal at shumpal@readingconnections.org .

Public Transportation Meetings

The City of Greensboro is hosting a series of public meetings in March to receive feedback about the city's future transportation needs. During these meetings, City staff will provide information about potential Transportation Improvement Projects. Attendees are encouraged to provide input on which transportation projects they would support. As many Reading Connections students rely on public transportation, we encourage you to tell your student about the upcoming meetings so their voices can be heard. They may drop in at any of the meetings listed below between 4 and 7 pm. Brief presentations will be made at 4:30 and 6 pm.
