Invite Your Friends: Take a Tour!

If you haven't attended a Connect with Reading Connections tour yet, you're missing the whole picture! Reading Connections does so much more than one-to-one tutoring!

Come spend an hour with us and find out about the many community outreach programs we offer, hear moving testimonials from students and tutors, and learn about how literacy affects individuals, their families, and the community. These tours are an excellent way to introduce your colleagues, friends, and family to Reading Connections.

Tours are held at 5:00 p.m. staring in the 5th floor conference room in the Self Help building at 122 N. Elm Street in Greensboro. The tour lasts exactly one hour.

We are also happy to conduct "virtual tours" at your home, office, or church to help spread the word about the need for literacy services.

Dates of upcoming tours:
April 13th
May 4th

If you'd like to reserve a spot on a tour or schedule an off-site presentation for your group, please contact Marcy Ray at 230-2223 or mray@readingconnections.org.

Get Real! Using Authentic Materials with ABE Students

Did you know that adult literacy students learn faster when they use real-life materials that are relevant to their interests and experiences?

New research confirms what many instructors and students have long seen as a best practice.

You can read more about the benefits of incorporating "authentic materials" into instruction in this article published by Proliteracy America:

http://literacynetwork. verizon.org/fileadmin/print_ resources/Get_Real_LitScape_ 2006.pdf

Go for the Gold Update

Thanks to the tutors who attended our "Go for the Gold" training/reflection session on March 6th! Tutors examined "four-leaf clovers" - four important questions to help tutors strengthen their instruction:

  • What has worked well for you and your student?
  • What have you struggled with?
  • What positive changes have occurred in your life as a result of tutoring?
  • What do you just not understand about tutoring?

Tutors explored these questions and left with "gold nuggets" - new practices and attitudes - to take back to their students.

These are questions you can explore on your own! Look for more training and reflection sessions soon!

Volunteers Needed for Montagnard Community Activities

Greensboro is home to the largest population of Montagnard/Dega immigrants in the United States. Formerly from the highlands of central Vietnam, many Montagnard residents fought alongside the U.S. in the Vietnam war and fled to the U.S. as refugees. Over the past 20 years, over 5,000 Montagnards have resettled in Guilford County. We need volunteers to help with upcoming activities in this community:

Health Screening

Many Montagnard residents face severe health problems as they attempt to integrate their native diets and customs into their new home and culture. To help provide health information to our Montagnard residents, Reading Connections, in partnership with UNC-Greensboro, is conducting a blood pressure screening at the Dega Alliance Church on March 21st from 12:30-3:30pm. Volunteers are needed to check people in, fill out forms, take blood pressures, go over informational material and help educate on health and nutrition. To sign up as a volunteer, please contact Rhiannon at rkelly@readingconnections.org

Census Events

Counting everyone in our community accurately in the 2010 Census is very important for the allocation of state and federal resources. Members of immigrant and refugee families and those with low English proficiency are historically difficult to count. To help ensure that everyone in the Montagnard community is counted, the MDA is conducting some Census community events on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 27. They need 5-6 volunteers for these events.

An information meeting will be held for interested volunteers this Saturday, March 13, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the MDA office (611 Summit Avenue, Suite 10). For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, contact Sandra Nichson at mda-alix@triad.rr.com.
