Students Vote!

Many of our students want to vote but have been held back by their inability to read well. This year, Reading Connections held several voting workshops to help familiarize students with electronic voting machines and the voter registration process. Some of our students voted for the first time this year and some were generous enough to share their experiences:

Richard H.: "I've always thought it was important to vote, but I wasn't confident enough to do it. I was afraid that once I got up there I wouldn't be able to read it. I had help from my tutor this year, and it felt good. I saw how it works and now it's not so intimidating. Now I can do it myself....It feels good to get your vote out there and have your opinon count on how things are being run."

John R.: "This was my first year voting. Everyone should vote. Everybody should have a right to vote. Everybody should have a voice. I never voted before because I didn't have the education to do it. Now I'm still not as educated as I want to be but I'm smart enough to know I needed to vote. The things that were happening were so important it made me want to do it now. It's a historical moment. I felt great about doing it. I'd vote every time now!"

Take a Tour!

The Reading Connections staff and Board of Directors are working hard to raise awareness in the Guilford County community about adult illiteracy and the outstanding work our tutors and students do to combat this problem. We will be holding one-hour site visits at least once a month to introduce community members to Reading Connections. We encourage you to invite people that you know to attend a site visit on December 2nd at 8 a.m., December 9th at 11:00 a.m., or December 16th at 5:00 p.m.. in the 5th floor conference room of the Self-Help Building at 122 N. Elm Street in Greensboro.Guests get to meet staff, hear about the range of programs offered by Reading Connections, and explore our facilities and materials.

We are also looking for tutors and students to share their stories with Reading Connections at these tours. Our visitors to past tours have said that hearing the first-hand experiences of our tutors and students is the most effective part of the visit. All you need to do is speak from your heart! Please contact Marcy Ray at mray@readingconnections.org if you or your student are interested in sharing at a tour. This is a great way for both students and tutors to stay connected to why literacy matters for all of us.
