Holiday Events

Mark your calendars for two very important Reading Connections holiday events!

First, our annual Holiday Social will be held the evening of December 5th. Watch your email for more details! This year, our social coincides with the Downtown Greensboro Festival of Lights! We'll have music, food, good cheer, and a fantastic view of downtown Greensboro from the Self Help building's 8th floor conference room. Watch the tree-lighting ceremony across the street in Center City Park, then stroll downtown Greensboro for more music, food, and entertainment.

The very next day, be part of the 3rd Annual Reading Connections float in the Jaycees Holiday Parade! The parade will be held December 6th from noon to 2:00 p.m. in downtown Greensboro. Reading Connections will also be part of the High Point holiday parade for the first time on November 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Grinch returns to preside over our float! Brave the Grinch costume (you'll be the most popular person there), or come in your own brightly colored clothes to be a Who. (We'll provide the antennae!) This event is tremendous fun and garners a great deal of attention for Reading Connections. Volunteers and students alike are encouraged to join the staff to enjoy the weather (historically warm and pleasant), hand out candy, and spread the word about Reading Connections! If you would like to be part of the float in High Point or Greensboro (or just drive the truck) please call 230-2223 or email mray@readingconnections.org.

High Point Activities

There are several exciting new events and classes happening in our High Point office this month.  We are offering an English Conversation Class two days a week for English Language Learners of any level to practice speaking English.  We have also begun a new Learning Lab, taking place four days a week.  Students can sign up and receive additional one-on-one tutoring at our office in any subject, including reading, writing, and math, in addition to using our computer lab for self-guided study.  Please let your students know about these opportunities and encourage them to give us a call, as they must sign up in advance to participate!

In October, we began a five-week Writing Lab in Greensboro for higher level students to work on their narrative writing skills by learning the stages of the writing process as well as spelling and mechanics.  We are planning on starting the course in High Point, tentatively in mid-November.  Please ask your students if they would be interested, and tell us if you would like to help.

We are always interested in your feedback. Do you have questions or concerns? Please contact the office. Sincerely, Reading Connections Staff
