Student Council Canned Food Drive

Don't forget: Greensboro's Student Council is sponsoring a canned food drive for Greensboro Urban Ministry!

We will be collecting cans of food from now until November 25 in the Greensboro RC office. Cans can be dropped into the collection box Monday- Friday 8:30-5. The box is in the waiting area up front. It's already half full - let's see if we can fill it all the way!

Fall Fundraising Campaign

As of November 2, our Fall 2009 Fundraising Campaign is on! We sent out nearly 1,000 letters to past donors, tutors, and new friends asking for your support. This year more than ever we need your help - even with a 15% budget reduction, we still need to raise another $80,000 to meet this year's budget.

Every gift helps, so please spread the word. If you would like to send a fundraising email to your contacts, please contact Marcy Ray at mray@readingconnections.org. She will be happy to send an email that can be forwarded to your friends and colleagues. Even better, tell your friends in your own words why you are a supporter of Reading Connections and simply direct them to our web site's donation page.

If you yourself would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts, please click the "donate now" button to make a contribution. Thank you as always for your steadfast support in making literacy available to ALL members of our community!

Human Race 2010

Reading Connections is planning on participating in The Human Race 2010. We will be forming a team made up of staff, volunteers, students, Board members, and other supporters. This is a great way to make a connection with your student and other nonprofit agencies. Lace up your tennis shoes and join Reading Connections for the Annual Human Race Walk! You can walk or sponsor a walker on the Reading Connections team.

Mark your calendars now - the race will be held March 20, 2010 starting at Grimsley High School in Greensboro.

Instructors Needed

We are in need of instructors to lead small group classes. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who wants to work with more than one student or for someone who wants to tutor but can't make the recommended 6-month commitment. Instructors are needed for the following classes:

  • Math: We have had numerous requests from students for tutoring in math. Basic math is an important part of literacy, which is defined as “an individual's ability to read, write, and speak English, compute and solve problems, at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family of the individual, and in society.” Many of our students need to improve their basic math skills in order to pass the GED or just to perform basic tasks like balancing a checkbook. Classes meet for 1-2 hours per week.
  • ESOL Conversation: Almost half of Reading Connections' students are learning English as a second or other language. Our ESOL Conversation class helps these students improve their speaking and listening skills. Instructors lead structured conversations for approximately one hour each week. We can provide assistance with curriculum and lesson plans. We need instructors who can lead an evening class.
  • Video-based reading fundamentals: This series of videos developed by the Texas Scottish Rite hospital is designed to use auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning to help students learn to read. Although it was designed specifically for adults with learning disabilities, these videos can help any student improve their reading skills. We have seen adults who have struggled for years - even decades - show dramatic improvement with these videos. The instructor serves as a facilitator, answering questions about class activities and helping guide supplemental activities. Our current class is offered at the Greensboro office on Fridays from 1:00 - 2:30.

If you are interested in serving as an instructor for any of these classes, please contact Micah Guindon at 230-2223 or mguindon@readingconnections.org.
