Save the Date: Voting Workshop

On October 7th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm a staff member from the Guilford County Board of Elections will bring an actual voting machine to show students/tutors how to use the machine and talk about the election process. On-site registration will be available. Located in the Self Help Building Downtown Greensboro 8th Floor Conference Room. Please email Rhiannon at rkelly@readingconnections.org or call 230-2223 to register. Be sure to pass this information along to your students if you think they may be interested.

Calling All Writers! Holiday Stories Needed!

At this year's holiday social (stay tuned for date and location) we would like to feature stories or poems and images from our students' lives. We will be selecting 3-4 students' writings. Each student whose writing is chosen will receive a free disposable digital camera to take photos to illustrate their story. Possible topics include:

      • A favorite holiday memory
      • What holidays are like at my house
      • Why I love the holidays
      • What the holidays mean to me

We will make a slide show out of each student's photos and play the slide show while the story is read. It would be ideal if the student would read his or her story, but another person (tutor or staff) can read it instead, or we can record the student reading and play the recording during the slide show.

Please contact us if your student would like to participate. Deadline for story submission is November 14th. (This might be a good project to take into our writing lab!)

Watch next month's newsletter for more information on the Holiday Social and the annual Jaycee's Holiday Parade float!

Take a Tour!

The Reading Connections staff and Board of Directors are working hard to raise awareness in the Guilford County community about adult illiteracy and the outstanding work our tutors and students do to combat this problem. We will be holding one-hour site visits at least once a month to introduce community members to Reading Connections. We encourage you to invite people that you know to attend a site visit on Tuesday October 14th at 5:00 p.m. or October 21st at 11:00 a.m. in the 5th floor conference room of the Self-Help Building at 122 N. Elm Street in Greensboro.Guests get to meet staff, hear about the range of programs offered by Reading Connections, and explore our facilities and materials.

We are also looking for tutors and students to share their stories with Reading Connections at these tours. Our visitors to past tours have said that hearing the first-hand experiences of our tutors and students is the most effective part of the visit. All you need to do is speak from your heart! Please contact Marcy Ray at mray@readingconnections.org if you or your student are interested in sharing at a tour. This is a great way for both students and tutors to stay connected to why literacy matters for all of us.

Writing Lab

As you well know, most of our students at Reading Connections are working to read better. Research shows that improving reading skills goes hand in hand with improving writing skills, yet our students, like so many people, struggle to get their thoughts on paper. It is reported that the most frequently failed section of the GED is writing. And our students frequently ask for help in spelling and mechanics. Since improving writing skills is a critical need among our students, we will be offering a five-week writing class for higher level students to work on their narrative writing skills by learning the stages of the writing process as well as spelling and mechanics. This evening class will begin Thursday, October 23 from 6 to 8 pm and run for 5 Thursday evenings (until November 20). Please spread the word to your students!
