Student Council Canned Food Drive

Greensboro's Student Council is sponsoring a canned food drive for Greensboro Urban Ministry! Members of Student Council want to give back to the community since they benefit from others' volunteer services. After a brainstorming meeting, they chose a can food drive. We will be collecting cans of food from now until November 25 in the Greensboro RC office. Cans can be dropped into the BIG *EMPTY* box Monday- Friday 8:30-5. The box is in the waiting area up front. We would appreciate your help in making our first Student Council volunteer event successful!

A Fond Farewell to Claire Dixon

Claire Dixon, our Program Manager, has accepted a position as Coordinator of Assessments and Adult High School at Alamance Community College.  Claire says, "I am sad to be leaving all of the staff, students & volunteers that I've grown so close to here at Reading Connections over the past 3 years, but I won't be going far.  I look forward to hearing about the continued progress of Reading Connections' students, and to hopefully collaborating with the agency in the future.  My last day here will be October 15, but I hope to keep in touch and can be reached at cdixon1976@gmail.com."  After the 15th, High Point tutors and other volunteers should contact Kyri Murdough, High Point Student Services Coordinator, for assistance at kmurdough@readingconnections.org or 404-3474. Kyri will be assisted by Nick Foley and Cynthia Mejia, our two wonderful Americorps members, both of whom are serving a second term in our High Point office this year.

Community Resources

How to find local resources:

UNCG just set up a new link on its library page to help the community and new families have access to the wealth of local information. This is a great resource for anyone working with families who is unsure of who to contact regarding housing, employment, school, etc. or who would just like to learn more about local resource for immigrants and refugees.

The United Way also operates "211," a dial-in service to help locate state and local services. From child care to hospice, food banks to pet therapy, translation services to tutoring, just dial 211 to find what you need!
