Take a Tour!

The Reading Connections staff and Board of Directors are working hard to raise awareness in the Guilford County community about adult illiteracy and the outstanding work our tutors and students do to combat this problem. We will be holding one-hour site visits at least once a month to introduce community members to Reading Connections. We encourage you to invite people that you know to attend a site visit on Tuesday September 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the 5th floor conference room of the Self-Help Building at 122 N. Elm Street in Greensboro.Guests get to meet staff, hear about the range of programs offered by Reading Connections, and explore our facilities and materials.

We are also looking for tutors and students to share their stories with Reading Connections at these tours. Our visitors to past tours have said that hearing the first-hand experiences of our tutors and students is the most effective part of the visit. All you need to do is speak from your heart! Please contact Marcy Ray at mray@readingconnections.org if you or your student are interested in sharing at a tour. This is a great way for both students and tutors to stay connected to why literacy matters for all of us.

Tutor Survey Reminder

Please take 5 minutes to respond to our tutor survey  if you have not done so already.  Reading Connections is interested in your feedback about the program so we can continually evolve and plan to make the tutoring experience better for you and your student.  If you are not able to access this or would like a paper copy, contact Rhiannon Kelly at rkelly@readingconnections.org.

Save the Date: Voting Workshop

On October 7th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm a staff member from the Guilford County Board of Elections will bring an actual voting machine to show students/tutors how to use the machine and talk about the election process. On-site registration will be available. Located in the Self Help Building Downtown Greensboro 8 th Floor Conference Room. Please email Rhiannon at rkelly@readingconnections.org or call 230-2223 to register. Be sure to pass this information along to your students if you think they may be interested.

Fall Tutor Reflection

Join us on October 14 th in Center City Park to discuss your experiences with your fellow tutors. We will use this time to reflect on our successes and struggles and discuss ideas we can all use in the future to help us and our students. We will begin at 6:00pm and light snacks will be provided. Please email Rhiannon at rkelly@readingconnections.org or call 230-2223 to register.

Tips from the Reading Specialist

It's a challenge to break tutors and students out of that tortured reading out loud go-round. But if you can get tutors to try "Supported reading strategies," the sessions will be much better.

These include:

Echo Reading --Tutor reads a phrase or sentence with inflection that indicates understanding. Then student reads the same passage as an "echo"

Shadow Reading --The tutor takes the lead reading and the student reads along with her/him her. The tutor can fade back and let the student take the lead if he/she is able, and then take the lead back if the student is struggling. The tutor does this smoothly, without any announcement of it.

Choral Reading --Students support each other and the reading is usually smoother, especially if the teacher is in the "chorus."

Silent Reading --Most tutors and teachers are uncomfortable with this. "How will I know if I/they make a mistake??" But this is the most important reading. It's the goal of reading instruction. It's how most reading happens in life.

Reading to Students --This is a good first step. If the tutor reads the text first, students will do better with whichever approach comes next.|
